Basket on a Budget
A little over a month ago, I provided a sneak peak to a basket that I decorated and also entered in a photo contest. It didn't win, but I'm happy with how it turned out and now that the contest is over I can finally post it.
I put this basket together for my local Kiwanis club to raffle off for a charity fundraiser. The challenge was that we had a limited budget, so I had to create something that draws attention but also contains goodies worth bidding on. Accordingly, my goal was to maximize funds for the fixin's by minimizing the cost of the decor.
Ultimately, I handmade all the decorations with party supplies from Dollar Tree, including purple ribbon for a central bow and crepe paper streamers for roses that I tied into the brim of the basket. I also made a felt sleeve for one of the basket items with leftover fabric, which you see below. The total cost? Under $5!
With most of the budget in tact, we were able to buy some really great fixin's, including Crown Royal, a top-shelf Canadian rye whiskey, and a bottle of Canadian maple syrup. The whiskey came with its own pouch though and the syrup just looked naked in comparison, so for the sake of symmetry - and because I'm nuts - I decided to make a little sleeve Canadian flag for it with felt left over from a Valentine's project.
I think the final basket came out really nice, if I do say so myself and the proceeds went to a really great cause. A friend of mine actually found the guy who won the basket afterward and I got to meet him, which was just kind of fun for me to see my basket go to a good home.
